Isaiah 40:6-8
A voice said, "Shout!"
I asked, "What should I shout?"
"Shout that people are like the grass.
Their beauty fades as quickly
as the flowers in a field.
The grass withers and the flowers fade
beneath the breath of the Lord.
and so it is with people.
The grass withers and the flowers fade,
but the word of our God stands
forever."
Observation:
The Lord is trying to tell us that our lives on this earth are very short. Compared to God, who is eternal, our lives fade away just like flowers or grass. Even if we live to be 90 our lives are still very short compared to the scope of time. Flowers are beautiful at first, but it doesn't take very long until they begin to wither. I think it was the famous philosopher Socrates who said, "Our lives are like dust in the wind." If you keep reading this passage in Isaiah down to the end of verse 9 it says, "Your God is coming".
Job 14:1-2
"How frail is humanity!
How short is life, how full of trouble!
We blossom like a flower and then wither.
Like a passing shadow, we quickly
disappear.
James 4:14
How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like a morning fog- it's here a little while, then it's gone.
Application:
The Bible is very clear that life is short, and that Jesus is coming Back! So, what do we do? As Christians, I think we are fine with the fact that life is short because death has no power over us, and we look forward to the return of Jesus. But what about our family, friends and co-workers that are not Born Again? Remember what Jesus said(John 3:3), "unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God." I don't want any of my family or friends to go to hell! I mean think about, eternal punishment in the Lake of Fire! I can't even imagine how terrible that will be.
Revelation 20:15
And anyone whose name was not found recorded in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire.
I looked online and found out that 150,ooo people die in the world every day. That is a lot of people, and I'm sure that a lot of those people died suddenly without warning. A lot of people have an interest in how the world will end but the fact is a lot of us could die today, then we would find out the truth pretty quick.
Hebrews 9:27
And just as each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgement...
The other day I was talking to a co-worker and he asked me if I believed in the Mayan Doomsday Calendar, and how the world is suppose to end in the year 2012. There is even a movie coming out called "2012" that is suppose to be about the end of the world. It was a perfect opportunity to talk about what the Bible says about the end of the world. I told him about Judgement Day, and about how some will go to heaven and others will go to hell, but best of all, I told him about Jesus! I told him about how God became a man and died on the cross to take the punishment for all of his sins, and that if he repents and puts his trust in Jesus he would be saved! I love sharing the Good News about Christ! I hope the Holy Spirit will help him to believe in Jesus.
1 Corinthians 1:18
The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God.
Prayer:
Dear Lord, thank you for sending Jesus Christ to die on the cross for our sins. Thank you for your grace and your mercy. Thank you for allowing us to take part in your plan of salvation for the people of this world. I pray that I would not shrink back from proclaiming the wonderful message of the Gospel of Jesus. I pray that I would not be ashamed and not be out to please people and not just tell them what they want to hear. I pray for the salvation of my family, friends and co-workers. In Jesus name, Amen!
