The Holiness of God

Scripture:

1 Samuel 2:2

No one is holy like the LORD!

     There is no one besides you;

     there is no Rock like our God.

Observation:

What does it mean to say that God is holy? Does it mean God is perfect? Does it mean God is righteous? No, it means God is separate. Although God is perfect and righteous, when we speak about God's holiness it is referring to the fact that God is totally separate from everything he has created. There is no other like our God. Nothing can be compared to the absolute awesomeness of our God. God is separate, God is holy.

Question:

What is more like God, a worm or an angel?

Answer: 

Neither! You can take the most beautiful angel in all of heaven, and the ugliest little worm on the planet, and neither of them are anything like God, not even the angel! That is how holy(separate) God is!

Psalm 77:13

O God, your ways are holy. 

     Is there any god as mighty as you?

Isaiah 6:3

     "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Heaven's

                Armies!

         The whole earth is filled with his glory!"

Application:

Leviticus 11:45 says: ... you must be holy because I am holy. If God is separate, then I must be separate. For example, because I am married to my wife, I am separated unto her. I can have no other relationship with any other woman because I have been separated unto my wife. It is the same with my relationship to God. When I became saved God separated me from the world and made me one with him. I am separate from the world because God brought me out of this world, I am holy. Praise Jesus!

Leviticus 20:7-8

So set yourselves apart to be holy, for I am the LORD your God. Keep all my decrees by putting them into practice, for I am the LORD who makes you holy.

1 Peter 1:14

So you must live as God's obedient children. Don't slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn't know any better then. But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. For the Scriptures say, "You must be holy because I am holy."

Prayer:

Dear LORD, you are so holy. There is no other like you! Thank you for setting me apart for yourself. Thank you for choosing us the be your people. Teach us what it means to be holy, teach us that you are holy. Thank you for sending Jesus Christ to die on the cross, to satisfy your holiness, to take the punishment for my sins. In Jesus name, Amen!
