"Behold, there is a man of God in this city, and he is a man who is held in honor, all that he says comes true. So now let us go there. Perhaps he can tell us the way we should go."
Here we have 2 men, Saul and his servant, looking for their lost donkeys. One of them suggests they should go see the "Man of God". This man of God is described as being "held in honor" and they say that "all he says comes true". They go to him looking for direction thinking he can help them find what was lost. They said "perhaps be can tell us the way we should go".
The "man of God" being spoken of in this verse is Samuel the prophet. He was a miracle baby when he was born because his mother was not able to conceive. The LORD had closed Hannah's womb, but answered her prayer for a son. Out of appreciation to God, Hannah dedicated her son Samuel to serve in the temple of God all the days of his life. Now that Samuel is much older, he has an honorable reputation as a man of God.
This verse made me think about the qualities we should have as men and women of God. Lets read the verse again:
"Behold, there is a man of God in this city, and he is a man held in honor, all that he says comes true. So now let us go there. Perhaps he can tell us the way we should go." 1 Samuel 9:6
As Christians this is how we should be thought of in our communities, neighborhoods, families and workplaces.
1. We should thought of as "men of God" and "women of God"
2. We should be "held in honor" because of our good conduct
3. Everything that we say should be "true"
4. We should be able to tell people "the way they should go"
Sure we've all blown it from time to time, but lets strive to be godly men and women. Never forget, Jesus died on the cross and rose again, to empower us to lives holy lives that are blameless and acceptable to God.
