Jesus in the Old Testament

Scripture

Isaiah 9:6-7 

For a child is born to us,

     a son is given to us.

The government will rest on his shoulders.

     And he will be called:

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

     Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

His government and its peace

     will never end.

He will rule with fairness and justice from the 

     throne of his ancestor David

   for all eternity.

The passionate commitment of the Lord

     of Heaven's Armies

   will make this happen!

Observation

There are many places in the Old Testament that speak of the coming of The Messiah. Here, Isaiah is giving us some of the names of the coming Messiah and describing his everlasting kingdom. It is kind of amazing to think that we know more about this kingdom than Isaiah did. If you think about it, the Old Testament prophets didn't even know the name "Jesus", name above all names. Colossians 1:26 says: This message was kept secret for centuries and generations past, but now it has been revealed to God's people.

Application

Every time I read a scripture like this, I think about my Grandma, who is a Jehovah's Witness. Jehovah's Witnesses don't believe that Jesus is God. They believe that Jesus is the first created being. They come to this conclusion by twisting scripture. If you look at this passage in Isaiah, it clearly states: v.6 ... And he(Jesus) will be called ... Mighty God! I need to continue learning the Bible so that I can reason with my Grandma and other Jehovah's Witnesses about who Jesus really is. Sometimes I'm intimidated by JW's because I think they know more scripture than me, but I have the Holy Spirit and a Bible.

Prayer

Dear Lord please equip me to do your work, I pray that you would save my Grandmother by the power of your Spirit. I pray for all Jehovah's Witnesses in the city of Oxnard and Ventura and the surrounding cities, I pray for an outpouring of your Spirit on the believers to be bold to proclaim the Gospel of Christ. Use New Life Community Church to have a passion for Jehovah's Witnesses, and to show the love of God through Jesus Christ. In Jesus name, Amen!
