Scripture
Isaiah 6:1-7 It was the year King Uzziah died that I saw the Lord. He was sitting on a lofty throne, and the train of his robe filled the temple. Attending him were mighty seraphim, each having six wings. With two wings they covered their faces, with two wings they covered their feet, and with two they flew. They were calling out to each other,
"Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Heaven's
Armies!
The whole earth is filled with his glory!"
Their voices shook the Temple to its foundations, and the entire building was filled with smoke.
Then I said, "It's all over! I am doomed, for I am a sinful man. I have filthy lips, and I live among a people with filthy lips. Yet I have seen the King, the Lord of Heaven's Armies."
Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a burning coal he had taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. He touched my lips with it and said, "See, this coal has touched your lips. Now your guilt is removed, and your sins are forgiven."
Observation
This has got to be one of the most awesome scriptures in all of the Bible! I mean think about it, a glimpse into the throne room of Almighty God! The Lord of Heaven's Armies! There's only two other places in all the Bible, that I know of, where someone has seen God in this way: Ezekiel 1 and Revelation 4. But, what I think is so awesome about this encounter with God is that one of the mighty seraphim that surround the Throne of God actually interacts with Isaiah. The seraphim flies over to him, touches Isaiah's lips with a burning coal from the altar of God, then the seraphim speaks to Isaiah telling him his sins are forgiven.
Application
When I read a scripture like this all I can think of is the absolute unimaginable awesomeness of The Lord Almighty! When I read a scripture like this it reminds me what a wretched unclean sinner I am. When I read a scripture like this it reminds me of the wonderful grace and mercy of our God. Even though he is holy and awesome, even though I am sinful with unclean lips, God still forgave me of all my sins. The Lord is so awesome!
Isaiah's reaction reminds me of when Jesus was on the boat with some of the disciples, they had been trying to catch fish all night but caught nothing, and Jesus told them(Luke 5:4), "Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish."
(Luke 5:8)When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, "Oh, Lord, please leave me--I'm too much of a sinner to be around you."
Prayer
Oh Lord, you are so awesome! The heavens declare your glory! Thank you so much for saving a sinner like me! Thank you for your grace and your mercy! Thank you for sending your Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross for my sins. Please help me to understand your ways, I want to know all about you. Help me to deny myself and my selfish ways, give me the strength to take up my cross daily and follow you. In Jesus name, Amen!
