Sermon on the Mount

Mathew 5:3-12 (The Beatitudes)

I'm so glad that Jesus taught us how to be happy here on this earth. I think even as Christians we look to the world a lot to find fulfillment and happiness, but Jesus gives us the keys to being blessed or happy. I have found in my own life that these principles work, but this is not like a self-help manual, these are the keys to living a godly life. I pray that every single on of these blessings will be a part of my daily walk.

1 v.3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Observation- Those who recognize they are in need of God's help. The kingdom of heaven belongs to those who confess spiritual bankruptcy.

2 v.4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Observation- The spiritual, emotional, or financial loss resulting from sin should lead to mourning and a longing for God's forgiveness and healing.

3 v.5 Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Observation- The gentle, those who do not regard themselves as higher than others in order to further their own agendas in their own strength. They inherit the earth because they trust God to direct the outcome.

4 v.6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
Observation- They recognize that God is the ultimate source of real righteousness, so they long for his character. They will be satisfied by a relationship with him.

5 v.7 Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
Observation- The kindness and forgiveness that the merciful show to others will be shown to them.

6 v.8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Observation- Those whose pursuit of purity and uprightness affects every area of life. Jesus taught that purity of heart was the most important.

7 v.9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
Observation- Those who promote the peace of the Messiah will receive the ultimate reward of being called the sons of God.

8 v.10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Observation- Those who have been wrongly treated because of their faith. God is pleased with people when they value him above everything else in the world.

9 v.11 Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad for your reward is great in heaven.
Observation- Jesus' disciples should expect the same opposition as he did. Their reward is not an earthly one but a heavenly one.
